Preliminary task - femme fatale

What is a Femme Fatale?

A Femme Fatale of a film noir film is a stock character of a mysterious and sexy woman who seduces the male protagonist who often leads them into compromising and dangerous situations. The phrase 'Femme Fatale' is translated from French to English as "deadly woman".
Additional adjectives to desribe a Femme Fatale of a film include:
  • vamp
  • witch
  • demon
  • black widow
  • heroine
Her ability to sexually hypnotise her victim is very supernatural, hence why femme fatale's are described today as 'powerful' and 'strong' women.
In early Hollywood, the role of a femme fatale was very fascinating to audiences because it broke up the sterotypes and social conventions as to what a lady should act like, especially in front of the opposite sex.

Their typical physical characteristics are very different to present day.

MAKE-UP AND HAIRSTYLE:
-Emphasize the brows, eyes and lips.
-The eyebrows play a major role in showing the facial expressions, so the women usually have a shaped and arc which helps to create a strong look on her face.
-As well as this, they usually have 'cat-eye' eye make-up as well as red lips to enhance the sexiness and fireceness of the femme fatale.
-Their hair colour is usually a solid black, deep dark brown, auburn, brown or platinum blonde.
-They either had long, wavy, with a side-parting. The waves and curls show the other side of the chracter, softness and kindness.

COSTUME:
The visual presentation is very important because it shows the type of character they are. They usually wear a sexy, body-fitted dress, and most of the time are bold colours of mainly either red or black. A lot of either leg or cleavage is on show but it is always one or the other, never both.
